Can My Bid Win This "Ye Olde" Shrovetide Football?

27th February 2026

Ashbourne Royal Shrovetide Football is one of the UK's oldest and most unusual traditions. The inhabitants of the beautiful Derbyshire town, on the edge of the Peak District, take part in a two-day game every Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday. Which team you are on is determined by which side of the river running through the town you, or your ancestors, were born on. That makes you either an Up'ard or a Down'ard - but ONLY if you are from Ashbourne and its surrounding villages. To the unitiated it's lawless chaos - but to those that play and understand it, it's a game of skill, strength and courage. But in truth it's more than a game. It's the heart and soul of the town. Join James Lewis - a long-time supporter of Shrovetide Football - as he discusses its amazing history and looks at some of the antiques associated with it. But will he be lucky enough to win a Shrovetide football when it comes up for auction?
