Teddy Bears Triumph As They Go Under The Gavel

A large collection of teddy bears from a local deceased estate in Derbyshire have stolen the limelight when they achieved £11,000 when they went under the gavel on Tuesday 23rd November 2021. The single owner collection which was included within the Winter Toy, Juvenalia, Advertising and Collectors auction consisted of over 160 single lots of Charlie Bears and other teddy bears from manufacturers and artists including Steiff, Merrythought, Robin Rive and Dean’s Ragbook.

Sean Devitt, auctioneer and head of the Toy Department at Bamfords said “Teddy bears have always been popular with collectors, they have the power to transport us back to youthful days and evoke memories of childhood, from Winnie The Pooh to Paddington Bear we all have a favourite”.

“The single-owner collection proved popular with collectors both locally and internationally and fierce and competitive bidding saw high prices achieved for a previously cherished collection. Once again we were pleased to offer another fantastic collection within our specialist Toy and Juvenalia auction which was sold without reserve”.

Lot 2149 - Charlie Bears/Isabelle Collection SJ4597 Jonesy Panda teddy bear, from the 2010 Isabelle Collection, 54cm high with tags, Limited Edition No.285 of 300 - SOLD FOR £300 (hammer price)

Lot 2167 - Charlie Bears/Isabelle Collection SJ4609 Smithy teddy bear, from the 2010 Isabelle Collection, 41cm high with tags, Limited Edition No.274 of 350 - SOLD FOR £240 (hammer price)

Lot 2128 - Charlie Bears/Isabelle Collection SJ4378 Ripley the Dog, from the 2009 Isabelle Collection, 29cm high with tags, Limited Edition No.97 of 200 - SOLD FOR £120 (hammer price)

 

Other highlights within the sale include Lot 2231 a French bisque head and composition bodied doll, probably by Jules Nicholas Steiner which sold for £1,000 (hammer price) and Lot 2301 a live steam horizontal beam engine which achieved £580 (hammer price).
