Athletics - a fine and important 19th century Australian silver coloured metal and enamel articulated sport presentation belt, the Grand Challenge Belt of Australasia, cast and applied with Royal coat of arms, the arms of Australia with kangaroo and emu supporters and two athletes, the central beaded cartouche inscribed Grand Challenge Belt of Australasia, Presented by the Committee of the Flemington Running Grounds, Run 13th Nov. 1886 Won by W. Clarke, dis. 120 yards, flanked by Union and Australian flags decorated in polychrome, outlined throughout with a bold border of stiff and scrolling foliage, 33cm diam, apparently unmarked, c.1886, cylindrical mahogany box and ebonised carrying case   Provenance: By descent through the family of the vendor, an ancestor of whom emigrated to Australia during the gold rush of the 1850's   . Condition Report: generally ok, a couple of tine chips to edge of one flag, blemish to centre,  a few knocks along  the edges original mahogany case and ebonised transport crate slight dent to one section visible inside
