Polar Exploration - English Marine School (early 19th century) A pair, HMS Terror Stuck in the Ice near Southampton Island, Back Expedition 1836 pencil with white charcoal heightening, 10.5cm x 17cm The captain of HMS Terror, during the The Frozen Strait Expedition of 1836-37, when the bomb vessel-polar explorer was stuck in the ice for ten months, was a competent draughtsman of note: these studies of their ordeal could be by the hand of Captain (later Admiral Sir) George Back FRS (1796-1878) himself.

The paper of each anthropomorphised cat sketch was taken from the then Nurse Blinkhorn's day book.
