Councillor Albert Ottewell JP (1861-1910) was the member of Derby Corporation for Castle Ward - a relatively deprived area near the Railway Station - from 1893 to 1903. Son of Draper Ottewell, he was the nephew and heir of Alderman Sir John Smith, a brass-founder on a national scale, with a works at Derby on Cotton Lane, normally referred to as "Brassy Smiths". On Sir John's death in 1897, Ottewell succeeded him as proprietor of the Company of which he was then Managing Director. The Fishing trophy was presented as an attempt to help improve the lot of his constituents.
