The Bristol & Exeter Railway was authorised in 1836 hard on the heels of the Great Western and it was built 1841-1844, engineered to Broad Gauge (7ft. 0.25 ins.) by the celebrated Isambard Kingdom Brunel./ His successor to 1854 was J. J. MacDonnell, whilst the locomotive engineer at this time was James Pearson. The B & E was amalgamated into the GWR in 1876
